Off-Grid Cost Calculator: Plan Your Whole Setup

This off grid cost calculator connects the all things every other calculator prices separately. Most cost calculators price one system at a time and that is not how a strategic off-grid build works, from the beginning. Your appliance choices decide how much power you need, and the power system is usually the biggest line on the bill.

So this one connects them. Pick your water source, your wastewater setup, your heating and your appliances, and it returns two numbers: what the whole thing costs to build, and what it draws every day. Swap an electric water heater for propane and watch both numbers move.

Land and the structure itself are not included. Those vary from a shipping container to a timber frame, and no honest range covers that. Everything else is here.

Figures are national ranges built from manufacturer specs, utility consumption data and published contractor pricing. They are wide on purpose.

Plan Your Whole Off-Grid Setup

Pick your systems and your appliances. Get what it costs to build and what it draws every day. Land and the structure itself are not included, because those vary too much to estimate honestly.

Where you are

Sun hours are winter figures, not annual averages. Off-grid systems have to carry the darkest month, not a good one.

Already have a power system?

Leave blank and I’ll size one for you. Fill it in and I’ll tell you whether what you’ve got will actually carry these loads.

These are national ranges, not a quote. What you actually pay depends on your county, your soil, your access, and what a local contractor is willing to drive out for. The ranges are wide on purpose, because anyone showing you a single number is guessing more confidently than the data supports. Every figure here is average consumption, not the nameplate wattage printed on the appliance, which is the maximum it can draw rather than what it uses. Use this to understand what drives the cost, then go get real quotes.

Every line in the result links to the guide behind it, so if the septic number looks wrong you can go read what a septic system actually costs and see where it came from. If there’s already a system on the property, a septic inspection tells you whether you’re inheriting a working one or somebody else’s problem. Same for well pumps and if the property doesn’t have a well yet, my well drilling cost guide covers what a new one really costs. And if you want a real battery bank size rather than a planning estimate, the solar battery calculator does the proper sizing math. Your perc test decides which wastewater options are even available to you, and that guide covers what the test costs and what a failure means. Land Survey Cost for the line item this tool deliberately leaves out.

One line worth a closer look is Starlink. It looks small at 20 to 100W depending on the dish, but it never switches off, and unless you’re running a Mini on DC there’s an inverter in the path adding its own idle draw around the clock. I broke down what Starlink actually costs an off-grid system separately, including why the spec sheet number isn’t the one to size against.

If the freezer line is what’s pushing your system cost up, it’s worth knowing that a lot of what people freeze doesn’t need freezing. Practical Self Reliance has a rundown of the eleven ways to preserve food at home, most of which use no electricity at all.
